A collaborative initiative
From June 15 to 20, 2024, VACC organized Montreal’s first Afro-Canadian Refugee Week with IDÉES-AFRIQUE, Migrations et Vies and Fondation Magalie.
Recognizing journeys and strengthening welcome
Marking World Refugee Day on June 20, the initiative highlighted the courage and resilience of people forced to leave their countries. Its aims were to raise awareness of refugees’ circumstances in Canada, promote inclusion and propose action to public authorities and relevant organizations.
Two complementary gatherings
The programme announced a family day, “Together for the Future,” on June 15 at Parc Lucie-Bruneau in Anjou, followed by a discussion evening, “Building Bridges: Refugees and Canadian Society,” on June 20 in Saint-Laurent. Family activities, information, discussion and testimony formed the main strands of this first edition.
A gathering in Anjou
The “Together for the Future” family day was part of the first Afro-Canadian Refugee Week. It was announced for Saturday, June 15, 2024, from noon to 5 p.m. at Parc Lucie-Bruneau, 7051 Avenue de l’Alsace, Anjou.
An evening to open a dialogue
On June 20, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Afro-Canadian Refugee Week scheduled a discussion evening at the IDÉES-AFRIQUE offices, 825 Rue Deslauriers, Saint-Laurent. Its theme was “Building Bridges: Refugees and Canadian Society.”
